"More resorting to dine and dash" by Alex Fensone, Dominion Post 5 July 2014

* Restaurant assoc survey found 15% restaurant owners noticed more dine + dash
* 23% in Wellington

If it is that prevalent why are we only hearing about it now? If you look at discussions below, the one out in Henderson was publicised through social media to try find the culprits.

Leads me to ask: How common is it for restaurants now to have CCTV cameras at their entrance/exits?

Restaurant runners stopped in tracks by Abbie Napier, The Press. 13 Sept 2014
"Dine-and-dash customers at a Victoria St bar and restaurant are the reason every group through the door must now hand over a credit card. Mexicano's owner Tony Astle said his establishment had fallen victim to several customers sneaking out without paying their bill."
" As a result of the thefts, anyone wanting to run a tab for food or drink now needs to provide a credit card, a requirement most Christchurch bars already have.

Tequila Mockingbird co-owner Sam Heaps said when he first opened bill-runners had been "rife" but the problem had settled down in the past six months.

Staff now asked for credit cards from tables near the front doors. This had resolved the problem. "

dunno if it was dine or dash but many years ago after a hunting trip a group of us went to restaurant on the way home from stewart island and sat down, while we waited we drank the water on the table. 10 minutes later we ordered, 30 minutes later they turned the lights off with us still unfed. oh bugga this we thought as we walked out, only to be confronted by a pretentious little %^&** who demanded we pay for the pitcher of water.
we just walked out
not exactly dine and dash but almost

Your experience, P & H, sounds like 'NO dine and dash'.

One Tree Grill had a dine + dash last Friday 27 March 2015. They consumed $400 worth of food + alcohol and left without paying. They provided false details when making the booking.

Offer of $200 voucher for any information that leads to iding the couple.

Police have decided it's no longer criminal to dine and dash

Police in Auckland have chosen not to investigate at least two cases of restaurant dine-and-dash thieves, saying it is a civil matter

You gotta love it when the Police decide it is a civil matter. I have to wonder where they draw the line. Is it okay not to pay for any 'service' but they'll chase you for stealing a 'product'? What happens if you go to the hairdresser, pick up some expensive products and then run away before paying for either.

By making it a civil matter, I assume it reduces the crime figures since it isn't counted as a crime. I am surprised businesses owners haven't campaigned against this change.
