Christchurch Winter Bistro Series for familiar food in secret temporary locations

Tue 9th Jun 2009 02:25PM by TMouse

Christchurch foodies literally wanting a taste of New York's hottest trends need wait no longer - the concepts of whimsical food and temporary restaurants are being brought to the city this winter.

Christchurch's foremost catering company, White Tie Catering, is about to launch its Winter Bistro series, where for one Thursday night of each winter month, familiar food will be offered in unexpected and secret temporary surroundings.

White Tie Catering chef Tina Duncan says the idea is a combination of the New York trends and her own personal search for the perfect weiner schnitzel. "Everyone needs great, tasty, familiar food sometimes," she says.  "Even my food hero Thomas Keller opened a temporary restaurant for this purpose … and that's what we want in Christchurch, a truly local bistro menu with interesting but familiar fare.

"The concept is simple but clever food. Some people call it soul food – food that's good for the soul because it brings back memories of great home cooking we had in our childhood, but updated with a modern ingredient or two just to keep us guessing."

Tina Duncan says the White Tie Winter Bistro is about eating well in good company - or as she puts it seriously good food with an element of fun – in places few diners would expect to have a meal.

"We are not opening a restaurant, but for one night a month, we'll open a temporary bistro with true a la carte fare, then, in nomadic style, be gone again the next day," she explains.

The menu and venue will change each month, but diners can expect to be sampling such things as the perfect schnitzel, slow braises and cassoulets, gratins and mash, homemade pate and toast, macaroni cheese, French Onion Soup and Lemon Delicious.

Tina Duncan says eating well does not have to be sacrificed because of the recession. "The food we will serve will be familiar, nourishing and affordable," she says. "Great food should be fun and the White Tie Winter Bistro is simply a twist on the high quality and high performance function hosting we are best known for. We will be cooking for Christchurch diners the way my mother used to cook for me and I cooked for my children."

Numbers of Winter Bistro diners will be limited by the size of the venues and temporary on-site kitchens White Tie will erect, so bookings are required. Phone 365 2837 to book your place and wait to find out 24 hours ahead of dining where to go .
