Seems to me that Metro (just like dineout reviewers) don't travel too far to select their restaurants.

What's happened to Vinnies? I was under the impression that their standard was high. And Roxy has had consistently good reviews. The other drop-offs are more understandable.

I think Vinnies is "reinventing" as something else, with Geoff Scott still there - hence no Metro listing. The Roxy and Everybodys situation mystifies me though.

* Metro restaurant list has always been Auckland centric
* Roxy won dish of the year last year (see page 2 of this thread)
* According to this tweet by Metro, Morita, Delicious + The Shed changed hands. Ella + Pure closed. https://twitter.com/MetroMagNZ/status/316695245909794816
* Not surprised w Ella. I had dinner there in May last year, the service was not good. I had to ask for the dessert menu when it appeared no one was going to ask if we wanted dessert after they cleared our mains. Yes we did wait a few minutes before I asked. We ended up having dessert + coffee elsewhere. If you can't be bothered asking us I don't feel obliged to have it there. The food was acceptable but I didn't think it was exceptionally good.
* Vinnies is a surprise. Hasn't it always been on the top 50 list?
* Also wonder why Dine by Peter Gordon http://www.dineout.co.nz/restaurant.php?rest=4224 and Simon Gault's Euro http://www.dineout.co.nz/restaurant.php?rest=62 did not make the top 50. Remember the ad in 2008 when Euro didn't make the list.

I'm perplexed as to how Oyster Inn made the list. They've been open for less then 6 months and they're included. Good marketing more than anything else, methinks.

They do this every time they bring the list out, include places that haven't even gotten their feet wet yet. Based on past restaurant performances or some other dealings going on, they get in there. Remember Botswana Butchery? It had barely opened and was called out as one of the best - turned out that their food was pretty good but service was appalling.

After the last two or three years I don't trust Metro at all, wasn't last year's supreme winner Clooneys? Against all these other powerhouse restaurants, the one where you stub your toe because of the lighting became the supreme winner.

Honestly, I trust DineOut's VIP reviewers much more.

* Metro's Supreme Restaurant of the Year Award 2012, Best New Restaurant, Best Casual Bistro: Depot Eatery & Oyster Bar. Page 2 has rest of the list.
* They do seem to like putting in new places. If you read back to page 1 you'll find MooChowChow was on the list in 2011 a few weeks after opening. Similary w Botswana Butchery in 2012. Oyster Inn seems to have been open a bit longer than MooChowChow or Botswana Butchery when those made the list.

2013 Metro awards ceremony was at Auckland Museum tonight. There were a few ppl tweeting from the ceremony. Most of the awards from Metro's tweets https://twitter.com/MetroMagNZ but there's tweets that confirm it too. Hashtag for the evening is #MetroBestRestaurants

Supreme Restaurant of the Year Award 2013: The French Cafe

Restaurants with multiple awards:
The French Cafe: Best Service, Best Fine Dining, Best Chef
Cocoro: Best Asian, Best Drink list

Didn't see any tweets for these two (last year's categories): Best Dish +
Progressive Restaurateur of the Year.

Here gots:
Best Casual Bistro: Depot (also 2012)
Best Upmarket Bistro: The Engine Room (also 2012)
Best Smart Dining Restaurant: O'Connell Street Bistro
Best Fine Dining Restaurant: The French Cafe
Best Chef: Simon Wright
Restaurant Personality Of the Year: The Tasting Shed's Ganesh Raj (also 2012)
Best Italian Restaurant: Toto (also 2012)
Best Asian Restaurant: Cocoro (also 2012)
Best Rural Restaurant: Te Whau
Best New Restaurant: Kazuya
Best Value for Money awards: Mexico
Best Service: The French Cafe (also 2012)
Best Drinks List: Cocoro
Best Short Drinks List: Ponsonby Road Bistro

More or less in the reverse order they were announced. ie Short drinks list was 1st awards and the tweet for best casual bistro was before the tweet for The supreme award.

Caterer for awards: Dawsons catering.
Pic of one of the mains: Trio of Silver Ferns Farm Beef http://pic.twitter.com/GsHaMwJPgZ

If anyone reading this attended the awards, do tell us more about it. What was the food like?

Interesting that Roxy has closed so soon after opening - it got raving reviews, and everyone I know that ate there said it was wonderful albeit very expensive.

Re the Roxy in Wellington mentioned by tpanday above, it seems that it has not really closed - its website says it has simply been 'rebranded' as the Cuba Street Bistro, presumably owned/managed by the same interests, this not necessarily. However, have not dined at either yet.

You folks are talking about 2 different Roxys in 2 different cities. Roxy in Auckland was Pack Groups pride and joy. Cuba St Bistro in Wellington changed its name because new owners wanted to avoid confusion with the Roxy Cinema in Miramar.

Thanks for the clarification re the Roxys, Pedro Ximenez - I guess I am well out of touch with the Auckland eatery scene after 7 or 8 years away, even if I did live there for over 20 years. I will now leave the discussion to others more qualified.

Roxy (Fort Lane, Auckland) has/is changing from a restaurant to a bar. Hence, they are no longer in DineOut.

Merriken: I think you'll find many many more eateries than 7 or 8 yrs ago.

Btw Are there many places that change names very frequently. see the restaurant at Sale St. It has changed names a few times. Last year's Metro's list "Cru at Sale St" was new to the list. actually it was Dallows renamed to Cru after the chef (named Luke Dallow) left. However it changed to Sale St Bistro after Nick Honeyman left. (http://www.salest.co.nz/site/webpages/press/sale-st-get-set-for-onsite-bistro says 5 July was when it opened w new name. I hear the bistro may be closed. (says http://www.viewauckland.co.nz/restaurants/sale-st-bistro-info-68447.html )

From the above we see Roxy in Wellington changed to Cuba St Bisro. I think it was called something else before it became Roxy.
